Portuguese Coastal Route continues to grow: a record in sight

August ends with the 50,000th pilgrim passing through Vigo, and the Coastal Route is about to reach a new historic milestone: more than 45,000 pilgrims have walked this route, which is known for being the most international and the one that grew the most in 2023. This increase in popularity has primarily been driven by women, who represent the majority of walkers on this route.

This impressive number confirms that the previous record is about to be surpassed: in 2023, 52,000 pilgrims used the Portuguese Coastal Route, and predictions for 2024 suggest that, with September and October – the months of peak activity on the route – the number of pilgrims could reach 70,000. This remarkable 45% growth compared to the previous year makes this the route with the most significant growth among the various paths leading to Santiago de Compostela.

The Portuguese Coastal Route, which starts in Porto and stretches 304 kilometers to Santiago, has seen its popularity double since 2020, with the percentage of pilgrims increasing from 7% to 14.57%. In comparison, the French Way has seen a decrease in walkers, despite still being the most walked route.

Places such as O Milladoiro, the last stop before Santiago, have felt the impact of this growth, with a steady flow of pilgrims who, besides seeking rest, are attracted by the region’s gastronomic and cultural offerings.

With two more months to go, the Portuguese Coastal Route is set to continue surprising, surpassing records and reaffirming itself as one of the most sought-after routes by pilgrims from around the world.
