GNR operation reinforces safety on the Camino de Santiago routes

The National Republican Guard (GNR) launched the “Bom Caminho 2025” operation this Monday, 22 April. Running until 31 October, the initiative aims to reinforce the safety of pilgrims travelling along the Camino de Santiago routes within Portuguese territory. The operation focuses on the Portuguese Camino, the Coastal Route, and the Interior Route — three of the country’s main pilgrimage routes.

Each year, thousands of pilgrims of various nationalities cross Portugal on their way to Santiago de Compostela, which requires increased attention from the authorities, particularly during peak seasons. The “Bom Caminho” operation, organised annually by the GNR, is designed to respond to this growing flow by offering support, security and guidance.

The plan includes increased patrolling in remote areas, accommodation zones and high-traffic locations, along with awareness campaigns on personal safety and responsible conduct along the routes.

Five territorial commands are involved in the operation: Porto, Braga, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real and Viseu. During periods of higher movement, the GNR will also be supported by Spain’s Guardia Civil, particularly in border areas, ensuring continuity of protection as pilgrims enter Spanish territory.

Pilgrims are advised by the GNR to plan their stages in advance, wear light-coloured clothing with reflective elements, keep their phones charged and stay in contact with family or friends. For those travelling by bicycle, the use of a helmet, proper lighting and protective gear is recommended.

With this operation, the GNR reaffirms its commitment to ensuring a safe pilgrimage along one of the most iconic cultural and spiritual routes of the Iberian Peninsula.
