Ponte de Lima to bloom section of the Camino

The project “Flourishing Camino de Santiago: Exploring Biodiversity in Correlhã” was one of the winners of the latest edition of the Participatory Budget of Ponte de Lima, in the area of Sustainable Development. Proposed by José Manuel Gonçalves Negrão, the project has received funding of 10,000 euros from the local government to beautify the section of the Camino de Santiago between Correlhã and the historic center of Ponte de Lima.

Ponte de Lima plays a prominent role in the pilgrimage routes, integrating the paths traveled by pilgrims coming from the south, passing through Porto, Rates, and Barcelos before reaching the town. This strategic location in the heart of Minho makes it an essential stopping point for those heading towards Santiago de Compostela.

Founded in 1125, Ponte de Lima is the oldest town in Portugal, known for its history, traditions, and heritage. The medieval bridge, which connects the banks of the Lima River, is a symbol of the town and a testament to its importance throughout the centuries. Additionally, the town maintains a strong connection to rural life and nature, characteristics that make it unique in the context of the pilgrimage routes.

Correlhã, the starting point of this section, is a parish rich in history and heritage. In addition to its connection to the Camino de Santiago, it stands out for the Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte Sanctuary and the Matriz Church, with architectural elements dating back to the Romanesque period.

The project, besides enhancing the route with plants and flowers, also aims to promote local biodiversity and offer pilgrims and visitors an enriching experience. The initiative strengthens Ponte de Lima’s commitment to sustainability and the preservation of cultural and natural heritage, elements that define the identity of this very special territory.
